Discount shopping has become a way of life for all types of people. Buying items at a discounted, bargin price empowers the consumer in the retail market while stretching a shopper's buying power. Prowl the shops but remember to maintain your dignity.

From Quick Guide: Discount Shopping
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Throw out the shame and embarrassment of days gone by. Affluent Americans do discount shop, often settling for nothing less then almost wholesale prices. If you see someone you know in a discount store, you can bet they are also discount shopping.

  2. Step 2

Wear comfortable clothing you are not afraid to get dusty. Serious discount shopping requires searching through piles of merchandise to find the deal you are looking for. Do not be afraid of sitting on the floor if the best rack is located at knee height.

  3. Step 3

Leave your children at home. Searching through racks of clothing for a designer original at discount prices takes concentration and stamina. This is not an environment for children.

  4. Step 4

Restrain the urge to enter combat for any item, no matter how big a bargain. Retain some dignity and walk away if the competition becomes physical. Every year a news story runs featuring shoppers who engaged in a physcial fight over a sale item. This behavior is not acceptable while discount shopping.

  5. Step 5

Use coupons and multiple discounts. Frugality is the goal of successful discount shopping. Check your receipt before you leave the store to confirm all available discounts were applied.

  6. Step 6

View discount shopping as a hunt to uncover the bargain you know is lurking around the corner. Stalking sales racks and waiting for mark down days are the keys to successful discount shopping. Do not be intimidated by the sales personnel while you are scouting your potential retail bargin.

  7. Step 7

Expect less personal service from discount stores than you would find at a full service department store. Target and WalMart do provide discount prices and customer service. Most discount stores offer little in customer service and long lines at the check out counter. Stay calm during these minor inconvinences, discount prices often come at a cost.

Tips & Warnings
  • A shopping frenzy can oversome even the most seasoned discount shopper. Beware of overpurchasing and restrain yourself.
