Things You'll Need:
- State Department of Motor Vehicles driver handbook
- Vehicle with current registration
- Current insurance verification or proof of insurance
- Birth certificate or other document to prove age and citizenship

Step 1
Study the driver's handbook issued by your state's department of motor vehicles to determine what age or other requirements must be met to qualify for taking the driver's license exam.

Check vehicle for working brakes, brake lights, emergency brake, turn signals, horn, and seatbelts. Make sure the driver's side window will roll down, the windshield provides an unobstructed view, and the vehicle has a rearview mirror and mirrors on the passenger and driver's side doors.

Check that the vehicle has current license plate registration and take proof of insurance and documentation proving identity and date of birth with you.

Practice driving smoothly without racing the engine or slamming on the brakes.

Obey all traffic signs and signals.

Allow enough space between vehicles to allow time to stop quickly if necessary.

Signal when changing lanes or making turns and always check mirrors and look over your shoulder before changing lanes or pulling into traffic.

Practice making left and right turns, lane changes, stops at intersections with and without traffic signals, backing up and driving in both regular traffic and on multiple lane highways.

Adjust mirrors and fasten seatbelt before starting vehicle. Place two hands on opposite sides of the steering wheel.

Look in mirror and over shoulder and signal before pulling into traffic.

Check traffic for hazards before stopping. Stop behind crosswalk line. Take foot off accelerator when braking.

Slow down, check for hazards and signal before turning. Turn from the correct lane and yield right of way when necessary.

Check mirror and look over right shoulder when backing up.

Step 6
Check mirrors, look over shoulder to check blind spot and signal before changing lanes. Maintain an even speed, do not enter traffic too slowly or accelerate too quickly.
