You've decided that you must have your own kayak. Saying that you want to buy a kayak is like saying you want to buy a car--there are many questions that you have to ask before jumping into the purchase.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Identify your kayaking needs. Thinking about how you will use it will help. For example, you may want to race, tour or fish with your kayak. You may need a kayak for the ocean, or you may need it for white-water rapids.

  2. Step 2

Determine how much you are willing to spend and if you want to buy a new or used kayak.

  3. Step 3

Decide if you want a kayak made by a particular manufacturer or if you want the kayak that best fits your needs and budget.

  4. Step 4

Be realistic about your experience. If you're a beginner, look for a kayak that will grow with you. If you are extremely comfortable in the water, you are ready for a "hardcore" kayak.

  5. Step 5

Decide what size kayak you want. A longer kayak is generally easier to paddle, more stable and capable of carrying heavy loads. They also move faster and glide farther with each stroke than shorter kayaks. A shorter kayak is lighter, usually less expensive, less cumbersome and easier to transport.

  6. Step 6

Determine the hull you need. Hulls with flat bottoms, hard chines and greater flare have better stability whereas round hulls with soft chines and less flare are more nimble and easier to roll if they should tip.

  7. Step 7

Consider how much money you will need to transport the kayak and other equipment. Factor that into costs.
