There are many ways to reduce the costs of your next family vacation without sacrificing any of the fun or comfort. Using just a little ingenuity and some careful planning, your next family vacation can be an exciting adventure and cost you less.

From Quick Guide: Family Fun
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Plan ahead. Like airfares, hotel accommodation prices can go up on short notice. Plan your family vacation well in advance to reduce costs as much as possible.

  2. Step 2

Pick up a guidebook for the city you will be visiting. Guidebooks will give you a calendar of events, costs of local restaurants and even ways to get around town. This can save you time and money once you get to your destination. You won't waste time going to different attractions that aren't in your budget range.

  3. Step 3

Consider a home exchange vacation. Home exchanges simply require a small fee to a secure website where you list your home and browse others. Here you can choose a place to visit and exchange your home with another for a small amount of money. This is an inexpensive way travel all over the country.

  4. Step 4

Take your vacation during the off-season. Resorts and vacation spots all have a time of year where they don't get as much business. During this off-season rates are considerably lower and can save you hundreds of dollars.

  5. Step 5

Stay in a condo. Renting a condo instead of a hotel room can save you money on food. Condos offer full to mid-size kitchens that allow you to purchase and prepare your own food. This allows you to splurge and go out to one really nice meal and save money for other attractions.

  6. Step 6

Take a day trip. Plan a day trip close to home that doesn't require an overnight stay. Hotel stays can be expensive. Try finding a destination that can be reached in a short amount of time and enjoyed for the day.

  7. Step 7

Camp out. You can find a campground or national park almost anywhere, especially in the United States. Camping can save you money on accommodations and can be a lot of fun.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider vacationing in your own town. You may be surprised at the amount of things there are to do in your own city. Discover it all over again from a tourist's point of view.
  • Taking a vacation with another family is a good way to reduce costs by sharing expenses.
  • Only use a reputable program when doing a home exchange. Posting your personal information on a public forum can be dangerous.
