Unwanted compact discs (CDs) typically receive a final resting place in a landfill because most recycling centers don't accept CDs or DVDs. However, this trash can become a treasure again through recycling. CD recycling options are numerous, from creating art to becoming a coaster to generating cash at a resale shop.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Unwanted CDs
  • Imagination
  1. Step 1

Decide whether to personally recycle unused or unwanted CDs by turning them into something else or to donate to someone else for reuse.

  2. Step 2

Search online for local options to recycle CDs. Look for companies that recycle computer parts or resale shops such as Half Price Books. Also, look for companies that will reuse the CDs by turning them into a useful item like a clock. Another option is to donate the CDs to a charity that has a resale shop.

  3. Step 3

Choose to recycle in-house. A few of the craft projects for recycling CDs include making mosaics, coasters, party invitations, scrapbook embellishments, garland, wind chimes, a birdfeeder or a bird repellent in a garden.

  4. Step 4

Go the extra mile and organize a CD collection or CD swap in the neighborhood and/or at work. At a CD collection/swap, people trade or donate CDs; this is similar to a swap meet but without exchanging money. A CD collection/swap day would give others who are unsure of what to do with unwanted CDs an outlet to recycle them. At the end of the collection/swap day, recycle the leftover CDs by donating, selling or reusing them.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be creative when thinking of ways to recycle.
