How to Encrypt Files in Windows XP Pro
Files or folders on your personal computer are potentially an open book to prying eyes or hackers. But, when working with a Microsoft Windows platform you can give yourself an extra measure of security by learning how to encrypt files and folders in Windows. This simple process of learning to encrypt, or secure your files and folders in Windows will protect your sensitive documents.

Get to the starting line! To get started with encrypting your files or folders, click "Start" and point your cursor at "All Programs."

Learn to accessorize. Once you have your cursor pointed at "All Programs" click on "Accessories" and then choose "Windows Explorer." You are now ready to begin securing your files.

Get right to the point. Select the folder or file that you wish to encrypt by right-clicking on the folder or file with your mouse. Choose "Properties" and then on the "General" tab click "Advanced."

Feel secure. Now you are ready to secure your file or folder. To complete the process, choose "Encrypt Contents to Secure Data" box. Then when prompted, click "ok."

Receive a parental warning. Once you have clicked "OK" you will be prompted with an "Encryption Warning" that will give you the choice of either "Encrypt The File Only" or "Encrypt The File and Parental folder." Choose "Encrypt The File Only" if you just wish to secure a single file. Choose "Encrypt The File and Parental Folder" to encrypt the entire folder. Once you have made your choice, click "OK" and you are done. Congratulations. You have secured your file!

Tips & Warnings
If you encrypt a folder, this secures all data within the folder and any sub-folders that may be created.
Any file or folder that is marked "System" cannot be encrypted. This also applies to files in the "System Root" directory.
Compressed files or folders cannot be encrypted.
