One cool way to make your Internet Explorer crash and possibly destabilize your system is to insert a certain line of JavaScript into a HTML (hypertext markup language) page. When you open that page with Internet Explorer you will be greeted by the much dreaded message, "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience". You can use this either to impress your friends or convert them away from Internet Explorer.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Internet Explorer version 6 or earlier

Step1
Download a simple web page from the Internet to a convenient location under your C Drive. Select "Save As" from the "File" menu of the Internet Explorer web browser.
Step2
Use Windows Explorer or My Computer to find your saved HTML file. Click on the file to select it and then right click to bring up the pop up menu and select "Rename". Change the ending of the file from ".html" to ".txt" to turn the file into a text file.
Step3
Open the new text file. The quickest way to do this is by double-clicking on the file name. You can also open Notepad and use the "Open" option from the "File" menu.
Step4
Paste the following code snippet anywhere within the HTML code of your text file:
Step5
Save and close the text file.
Step6
Change its ending back to ".html". Use the same steps as in step two.
Step7
Double-click on the new HTML file to launch Internet Explorer. If Internet Explorer is not your default browser, select the file using Windows Explorer or My computer, right-click and select "Open With" and then "Internet Explorer". You should get a window prompting you to close Internet Explorer. Clicking OK has unpredictable results. Not only does it make your Internet Explorer crash, it may even leave the computer system hanging. Good luck!

Tips & Warnings

  • You may not be able to make your Internet Explorer crash if you are running version 7 or higher.
  • Save all your work before you try this.
