A wedding is a time to join together not only two people, but also their cultures and backgrounds. One way to do this is with native music. If you are of German descent, adding German music to your wedding can be a meaningful celebration of your love and your heritage. Here are some tips to help you find German wedding music.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Know what kind of music you are seeking. There are many styles of music traditionally played at German weddings, from polkas to waltzes. Deciding what kind of music you want, or at least deciding if you want music that has a slow tempo or one that is fast, will help you narrow down your search and make it easier to find what you want.
Step2
Choose a geographical area. Traditional German music, much like its cuisine, history and folklore, varies greatly by region. For example, Bavarian music is much different than the music that is traditional to the region around Rotterdam. If you or your fiance know what specific region of Germany your family hails from, focus your search on wedding music that is traditional to this area. This will help you narrow down your choices of music. If you do not wish to be this specific, you may want to divide your search between music traditional in the eastern half of Germany versus the western half, as these areas varied greatly in culture even before the Berlin Wall was erected.
Step3
Look on the Internet. Using various online music websites in your search will allow you to expand your options much farther than your local music store. You may be able to find online dealers that specialize in international music or websites native to Germany that can provide you with traditional music as well as other suggestions for how to make your wedding day special.
Step4
Contact local German resources. There will likely be a group or center devoted to German culture and heritage in or around your area that will be able to help you find just the kind of German music you are seeking. They may also be able to give you tips on traditional German dances and other wedding traditions native to German culture.
Step5
Seek out local musicians. Do a local search to see if there are any musicians in your city that play German music. While they may not be willing to play a wedding, they may at least be able to give you information about the different styles of traditional German wedding music and help point you in the right direction.
Step6
Have a translator. Many of your results during your search, whether it be sheet music or a German music website, are likely to be written in native German. If you do not speak German yourself, it may be beneficial to have someone aiding you in your search who speaks German and can help you to understand what you are reading. This will make the search much less frustrating and will guarantee that you are not misinterpreting something and getting the wrong music.
