Whether you're planning a destination wedding in Germany or want to honor your heritage with a traditional German wedding ceremony, be prepared for some red tape before walking down the isle. Weddings in Germany can be very romantic, so here are a few tips to help you plan your traditional marriage ceremony in Germany.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Passport
  • Death Certificate of Former Spouse (if applicable)
  • Divorce Decree Showing Dissolution of Previous Marriage (if applicable)
  • Health Certificate
  • Statement of Parental Consent (if party is under 18 years of age)
  • Certified Translation of Required Documents
  • German Interpreter
  • Civil Ceremony Site
  • Traditional Ceremony Site
  • Reception Site

Step1
Check with your local embassy or consulate and the local magistrate's office to see what documentation is necessary. Several items you may need to provide are a birth certificate, a passport showing proof of residence and proof that any prior marriages have been terminated. If these documents are not in German, you may need to provide a certified translation.
Step2
Provide a six-week notice to the German city officials of your planned marriage ceremony. There must first be a civil ceremony, which is usually held at city hall with a few witnesses and the couple's parents. The ceremony is normally performed in German, so plan to have an interpreter present!
Step3
Reserve a room in a hotel or restaurant, schedule the band and purchase invitations at least six months in advance of the traditional German church wedding.
Step4
Meet with a priest to discuss the mass, songs, readings and the ceremony itself. This needs to take place three to six months prior to the traditional church ceremony.

Tips & Warnings

  • You should start with the legal formalities at least six months in advance. Travel arrangements need to be made early also.
