To be a successful wrestler, you have to have the right gear. Proper equipment gives you a competitive advantage and accentuates your style of wrestling. It also provides safety to keep you competing longer. To get the gear that's right for you, follow these steps.

From Quick Guide: Sports Clothing and Gear
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Talk to your coach to find out which type and color of singlet is right for your team, and go to a store that specializes in wrestling apparel. Try on the singlet before buying. Buy a snug fit for optimal performance.

  2. Step 2

Buy wrestling shoes that give you the best flexibilty and traction for your style of wrestling. Talk to the salesperson to find out which shoes match your wrestling needs. Look for a color that matches your singlet.

  3. Step 3

Find headgear that will protect your ears. Wrestlers' ears are particular vulnerable to injury and infection. Choose ear-protecting headgear that is loose enough to be comfortable, but snug enough not to come off during competition.

  4. Step 4

Talk to your coach or other members of the team to find out if there is any extra equipment you're going to need. You can purchase elbow and shoulder pads for harder surfaces, for example, but these are not required to participate in the sport.

Tips & Warnings
  • Most male wrestlers do not wear a cup because it inhibits certain moves, but jock straps are encouraged.
  • If you're a female wrestler, choose a special singlet that provides more chest coverage and support.
  • You'll need a sweatsuit or other casual, loose-fitting clothes to lounge around in when you're not competing.
  • Always try on gear before purchasing. A snug fit is a wrestler's best friend: it gives your opponent less to grab on to.
