Participating in high school sports can be an enriching part of any high school experience. Playing sports allows you to meet kids with similar interests and develop friendships that can last a lifetime. Getting started in sports as early as your freshman year is the best way to get the most out of it. You can be well on your way toward playing high school sports by following these steps.

From Quick Guide: High School Sports
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide which sport you are interested in playing. If you played a sport during your elementary school years, you might want to continue at the high school level. You might also want to explore a new sport you're interested in and have an aptitude for.

  2. Step 2

Go to the athletic director's office on the high school campus and find out about tryouts for your chosen sport.

  3. Step 3

Talk to the coach before tryouts to find out what you'll need in order to sign up for a sport. You may need to have your parents complete forms. Your school or league may require a physical examination. Note any special equipment you may need to bring to the tryout.

  4. Step 4

Ask other students participating in your chosen sport what their experience has been. Find out about the time commitment involved, and ask for tips on how to juggle school work and sports.

  5. Step 5

Drill yourself in the fundamentals of the sport before the tryouts, so you'll be in position to show the coach your best stuff. Get help from friends and family members to practice your jump shot, fastball, passing, long jump, tennis serve or golf swing.

  6. Step 6

Make the team. Then give it your best. Show up for every practice and every game. Win or lose, enjoy the chance to play the sport you love.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you fail to make the team your first time, try again next season or choose a different sport. Most schools have freshman, junior varsity and varsity squads to match any level of experience, so there's room for you somewhere if you stay positive and practice.
  • Be sure you're ready to make a serious commitment before trying out for a sport. High school sports can be time-consuming and expensive and often require travel.
