Hapkido is a form of Korean martial arts that has gained recognition around the world, including in the United States. Whether you are a student of Hapkido or just enjoy learning more about this ancient fighting and self-defense technique, joining a club specifically geared toward Hapkido is a good place to meet like-minded individuals.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look in your newspaper for local clubs. Many publications include listings for clubs in the area including contact information and sometimes where and when they meet. Although they may not print this information often, you can sometimes call the paper's office and find the information you're seeking.

  2. Step 2

Check with the local university. Durham University and Iowa State University both offer Hapkido clubs. There are a number of others who also have karate clubs, including some featuring Hapkido, although they may only allow students to join their club.

  3. Step 3

Visit local martial arts schools and see if they know of clubs you can join either associated with their school or an organization they are members in. Even if they aren't involved in any clubs personally, they may know where to point you to find one suitable to join.

  4. Step 4

Buy martial arts magazines, especially those covering Korean martial arts like Hapkido. These magazines often have advertising space where clubs may be listed or they may feature specific clubs in various issues. You can also find online magazines by searching the Internet.

  5. Step 5

Search for state associations specifically for Hapkido martial arts like the Nebraska Hapkido Association. You can find listings of these types of clubs on a variety of websites including those belonging to schools, magazines and other clubs and associations.

  6. Step 6

Research national or even international associations, as well. The American Hapkido Association and International Hapkido Federation are examples of clubs you can find on this level.

  7. Step 7

Check out the online Martial Arts Resource Page, which covers all types of Korean martial arts forms including information on Hapkido. They have links to clubs and organizations, including online versions, as well as other resources.

  8. Step 8

Join an online club, if you can't find a physical group to join. Although you may never meet the other members face-to-face, you can still talk with other people and share information about a martial art that you enjoy.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many clubs require annual dues to be a member, but others are free for anyone interested in learning more about the martial art.
  • Some clubs also offer newsletters, which is a good way to learn about upcoming Hapkido events or news about renowned Hapkido instructors. Clubs offering this perk usually have a membership fee to fund the publication, but it could also make the group more worthwhile.
