Capoeira is a dynamic African and Brazilian martial art that combines music and sparring of pairs in a circle ("roda"). To an unknowledgeable observer, the capoeiristas appear to be dancing. This is a competitive game of technique and strategy that includes beautifully fluid acrobatic play, feints, subterfuges, sweeps, kicks, and head butts. Although capoeira can be used in self-defense, the goal is not to injure.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Watch videos. There are many capoeira exercise and performance VHS, DVD and virtual videos show-casing the movements and action. VHS and DVD videos can be purchased from brick-and-mortar and online retailers. Virtual video clips can often be viewed for free.

  2. Step 2

Join classes. Whether in a school or fitness center, capoeira instructors often welcome a limited number of observers to their classes. Capoeira schools can provide full training in not only self-defense movement but also the cultural aspects of the martial art. This includes the playing of accompanying instruments, singing, philosophical underpinnings, and history. Student achievement through this staged mentoring process is symbolized by different color belts. Conversely, fitness centers may limit their instruction to multi-level capoeira cardio or self-defense classes to pre-recorded or live music.

  3. Step 3

Attend live performances. Capoeira schools may hold "open houses" for students to show-off their newly acquired skills. Master instructors and students may also perform or demonstrate capoeira at community events. These kinds of activities are regularly listed in local arts and entertainment papers. Contact your local capoeira school for additional information.
