Talk about being the talk of the town—just try teaching your pet salamander some tricks! These fascinating members of the animal kingdom may surprise you by what they can do. Salamanders are from the amphibian group. These reptiles are usually between 5 and 20 cm long. They are cold-blooded animals, but they can "warm up" to you as you spend time teaching them some basic tricks.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get your pet salamander ready for learning tricks by getting his favorite foods. Most amphibians are carnivorous, so insects, spiders and worms make great meals.

  2. Step 2

Move your hand back and forth as you hold the food out to your pet reptile. In the wild, they are used to eating moving prey!

  3. Step 3

Talk to your pet salamander just as you would to a dog or cat. He will get used to the sound of your voice. Teaching him the trick of taking food from your hand takes time and patience, but he will get it!

  4. Step 4

Try to teach your salamander to "beg" for his food by raising your hand slowly and slightly above his head. Say the word "up" as you raise your hand with the food. As soon as he raises up for the food, give it to him and repeat the word "up" as you release the food.

  5. Step 5

Repeat these basic steps for small animal tricks often. The more time you spend with your pet salamander, the more you will both enjoy each other!

Tips & Warnings
  • Wash hands with soap and warm water after handling your salamander. Amphibians have toxins in their skin to repel predators. Salmonella can also be present on the skin of reptiles.
