Think Mickey, Minnie and Stuart Little and it's no wonder buying a pet mouse is so popular. These cute creatures are easy to care for and offer several years of enjoyment. Choosing one is easy and upkeep is inexpensive. Knowing some key points will help in determining which mouse to buy.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • A cage with narrow bars or one surrounded by glass or plastic
  • Water bottle and bowl for food
  • Mouse toys
  • Mouse food
  • Bedding, preferably aspen or something comparable

Check Housing Conditions Closely

Step1
Find a pet store that houses mice in clean cages, preferably glass or plastic with good bedding.
Step2
Notice if the cage has plenty of water, food and toys. A well-cared-for mouse thrives in this environment.
Step3
Ask if the mouse has been fed a variety of foods, such as supplements along with its regular meal. This ensures a balanced diet.
Step4
Smell the cage area for ammonia. If the odor is strong, this might indicate poor ventilation or lack of clean bedding. Males' urine does smell stronger than females.
Step5
Make sure the males and females have been kept apart. You don't want any surprises from the female once you have her home.

Check the Condition of the Mouse Closely

Step1
Ask how old the mouse is before buying. Females should be 5 weeks old while males 4.
Step2
Look at the eyes to make sure they are clear and bright.
Step3
Hold the mouse to see the condition of its coat, tail and feet. The mouse should be clean and its coat shinny, and it shouldn't bite you.
Step4
Notice if the mouse is scratching itself. This could be a sign of parasites.
Step5
Watch the activity level. A healthy mouse will be energetic and lively.

Choose a Pet Mouse

Step1
Determine if you want one or more than one mouse.
Step2
Remember a male and female together will breed.
Step3
2 females will make a better combination than 2 males living in the same cage.
Step4
Buy your pet mouse.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not use cedar or pine as bedding
