How to Breed a Pet Fox

Foxes are as beautiful and complex as they are wily and hard to breed. However, the right approach, dedication and some knowledge can help in successfully breeding a pet fox. Follow these steps to double the joy and excitement of living with your fox friends.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a veterinarian who has experience with foxes to guide you through the process and to observe your animal's behavior and health. A vet who has treated or bred a pet fox is ideal.

    • 2

Choose a tame strain of fox breed, such as the Tame Silver Fox. Starting off with a tame breed that has undergone generations of domestication will greatly increase your chances of successfully breeding a pet fox.

    • 3

Select friendly and tame parent foxes. The behavior of the 2 parents will be a pretty good indicator of the behavior of their offspring. So, observe the behavior of a group of tame foxes and select a pair that seems friendly towards foxes and other species.

    • 4

Commit yourself to lots of pet care. Foxes require plenty of space, attention and caution. Those needs will be multiplied should breeding be successful.

Tips & Warnings

  • Foxes bred commercially, for sale or for fur, are considered agricultural products, and commercial foxbreeding is subject to government regulation. Check with your local agricultural extension office to find out whether regulations apply to home breeding.

  • Breeding foxes from the wild is not advisable. Foxes are wild animals and it is very difficult, and potentially dangerous, to try adjust the behavior of the animal in only one generation.
