A debutante is a woman being presented to society by her father when she gets to a marriageable age. The custom started in England and dates back to 1748 in the United States. It was from the first debutante dances that the tradition of the "Debutante Ball" began. All debutantes used to dress in white gowns with long white gloves. Today it is acceptable to wear a gown or cocktail dress of any color. Here are some different ways to find the perfect gown to wear to a debutante ball.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Design the dress yourself and have it made by a top-quality tailor. If your current tailor doesn't make dresses, ask him for a recommendation. Designing your own dress and having it made will give you exactly what you desire in the perfect color and with the perfect fit.

  2. Step 2

Shop at a high-end store specializing in gowns or evening dresses. The staff will be expert at matching evening gowns to your body type, weight and skin tone. They will also recommend accessories and hopefully you can leave the store outfitted with everything you will need for that special evening.

  3. Step 3

Save money by shopping at discount clothing stores or shop sales at some of the higher-end department stores. You can pick up a beautiful dress for less.

  4. Step 4

Ask a really close girlfriend who is the same size and has already been to a debutante ball if you can borrow her dress. She may not intend to wear it again anyway.

  5. Step 5

Look in vintage clothing stores and consignment shops. Many wealthy women only wear clothing once, especially dresses worn to society events.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you have a matching cloth shawl or fur stole in case the evening is cool.
  • Consider having your makeup professionally applied while you are having your hair and nails done.
  • If you buy a gown, be very careful if it has to be put on over makeup. Make sure all body lotions have been completely absorbed. Don't put on your gown until one minute before you are ready to leave.
