How to Find a Minivan Mechanic

The family minivan is in need of some repairs and you don't know where to go. You're in need of an honest skilled mechanic who won't charge you an arm and a leg. Finding such a mechanic might take a little work on your end but it is well worth the effort.

1. Determine if your minivan has a manufacturer or extended warranty. This information should be located with your sales contract. If you are confused about your warranty and what repairs are covered, call the customer service phone number on the warranty and ask.
2. Find an auto dealership in the phone directory that services your make of minivan, if you have determined that the manufacturer's warranty still covers your vehicle. You can search the Internet for a dealer near you by searching the auto maker's name such as "Honda." The auto manufacturers' websites have dealer location searches. Call the dealer and make an appointment. They should look at your minivan for free.
3. Ask trusted friends and neighbors for recommendations if you do not want to go to a dealership or your vehicle is out of warranty. References are the best way to find a reputable mechanic.
4. Search the Internet for auto mechanics in your area. CarTalk and the International Automotive Technician Network (i-ATN) are both great reference sites that feature a database of mechanics .
5. Call the shops that you selected and ask if they service your type of vehicle. Inquire about their business hours and their repair warranties. Hours should be convenient for you and ideally the warranties should cover parts and labor for 6 months or more.
6. Make sure the shop is AAA (American Automobile Association) certified and their mechanics are certified by ASE (American Service Excellence).
7. Visit the shop and look around. First impressions are important. Good shops are busy. If you see empty stations and few cars, drive to the next shop.
8. Ask for a free estimate. You should not have to pay anything to get your minivan checked. The estimate should be printed and detailed showing all parts prices and labor charges. The warranty should be printed as well.
