Monster truck racing is an adrenaline-filled activity, involving really big trucks, crushed cars and even occasionally a fire-breathing metal lizard. A rally usually consists of a racing stage, when 2 trucks are pitted against each other in a drag race, and the freestyle stage where a single truck is given full control of the floor to do as many stunts as it wishes in a set time period.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A Monster truck weighing at least 10,000 pounds
  1. Step 1

Practice your driving skills; this can either be accomplished by joining an already existing monster truck team or by purchasing your own monster truck. Monster truck racing, unlike street car racing, requires a very large initial investment. The big vehicles are very expensive and need much in the way of upkeep. Your driving skills for the racing portion could be learned by racing regular cars, but you would still need time to familiarize yourself with the big boys.

  2. Step 2

Crush a few cars. The freestyle portion of a rally usually involves crushing some cars. In order to really compete, this is a skill you must master. Use cars from a junkyard, as newer cars are way too expensive for this activity.

  3. Step 3

Earn your class B license by taking the test. The class B test is graded by Class A-rated drivers and consists of evaluating the driver on knowledge of the vehicle including all cockpit switches and safety equipment. The other half of the test is about vehicle control (turning, starting and stopping) and, of course, car-crushing at a variety of speeds.

  4. Step 4

Complete the Class A requirements. These involve demonstrating your knowledge of the vehicle by completing 10 monster truck shows while being observed by a Class A-rated driver. After you have proof of all 10 performances, your application is reviewed by the Monster Truck Racing Association Board (MTRA) who then decides if you need further practice or if you have earned the right to compete in a monster truck rally.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you have all the necessary safety equipment before driving a monster truck including helmets, neck brace, a fire resistant suit and some sort of eye protection.
