How to File a Commercial Auto Insurance Claim

A commercial auto insurance policy is for someone who uses a vehicle in his business. The policy may cover any employee. Many times if there is an accident one must be working in the line of business that the policy was written for. There are a few exceptions, but generally the claims process is straightforward.

Instructions

    Preliminary

  1. Step 1

    Get the name of the other drivers at the scene of the accident. Request their insurance information and contact numbers.

  2. Step 2

    File a police report.

  3. Step 3

    Take pictures of the area, the vehicle location and the damage.

  4. The Claim

  5. Step 1

    Determine whether the problem, driver and vehicle are covered by your insurance policy. Read the "coverages" and "exclusions" section thoroughly.

  6. Step 2

    Visit the insurance company's website. Many insurance companies have a button or link that will lead you through the claims filing process. If the information is not online, find a phone number to call for assistance. Have your policy number, driver's license, employer's information and vehicle registration available.

  7. Step 3

    Notify your insurer or the agent for the insurer. State laws require insurance companies to respond within a certain amount of time, so filing your claim starts the process. Describe the events that have taken place and keep records of your contact with the insurance company.

  8. Step 4

    Let the insurance representative know the details when he arrives to view the damage. A file has been established for you at the insurance company, but make sure the representative that comes is fully up to date on all that has occurred. He will want examine the vehicle and, possibly, the accident site. Go with him and explain the details.

  9. Step 5

    Keep good records. Insurance companies and attorneys will want documentation of the event. File everything away in a safe place.
