How to Learn to Square Dance

Although learning to square dance can seem challenging at first almost anyone can learn the basic steps. Here's how to prepare for your own hoedown.

Instructions

    Circle Left and Circle Right

  1. Step 1

    Face each other and join hands to form a circle.

  2. Step 2

    Turn slightly left or right as directed by the caller.

  3. Step 3

    Move forward around the circle enough to cover the distance directed by the caller.

  4. Step 4

    Circle left if the caller doesn't specify which direction to move.

  5. Step 5

    Go the full distance around the circle if the caller doesn't specify a distance.

  6. Step 6

    Drop hands at the end of the circle, although couples may continue to hold hands.

  7. Forward and Back

  8. Step 1

    Step forward three steps.

  9. Step 2

    Pause and bring the free foot forward to touch the floor without transferring your weight to the free foot.

  10. Step 3

    Step back three steps, starting with the free foot.

  11. Step 4

    Pause and touch the free foot down beside the weight bearing foot.

  12. Dosado

  13. Step 1

    Advance by pairs, passing right shoulders.

  14. Step 2

    Pass to the right behind your partner.

  15. Step 3

    Move backward, passing each other's left shoulder to return to your starting position.

  16. Step 4

    Avoid touching your partner.

  17. Step 5

    Maintain your position in the circle. Do not change.

  18. Swing

  19. Step 1

    Face each other and hold hands.

  20. Step 2

    Step forward until your right sides are beside each other.

  21. Step 3

    Turn in a clockwise direction while moving around each other.

  22. Step 4

    Drop hands.

  23. Step 5

    Turn to the right until you are beside your partner and facing the same direction. Only one dancer performs this move.

  24. Step 6

    Join hands to form a couple.

  25. Promenade

  26. Step 1

    Hold hands as a couple and walk around the circle counterclockwise.

  27. Step 2

    Walk a full time around the circle unless otherwise specified by the caller.

  28. Step 3

    Go further than once around the circle if the man's home position is not reached on the first turn.

  29. Step 4

    Go a shorter distance such as a quarter- or half-turn around the circle if the caller specifies a shorter distance.

  30. Step 5

    Turn toward the center of the circle as a couple and continue to hold hands at the end of the set.

  31. Allemande Left

  32. Step 1

    Face your corner.

  33. Step 2

    Hold each others left hands.

  34. Step 3

    Turn all the way around each other.

  35. Step 4

    Drop hands

  36. Step 5

    Rejoin your partner.

  37. Arm Turns

  38. Step 1

    Face each other.

  39. Step 2

    Join left forearms.

  40. Step 3

    Walk around each other until you cover the distance specified by the caller.

  41. Step 4

    Join right forearms.

  42. Step 5

    Walk around each other to cover the distance specified by the caller.

  43. Bow to Your Partner, Bow to Your Corner

  44. Step 1

    Partner with the dancer facing you on the other side of the square.

  45. Step 2

    Join hands with your partner.

  46. Step 3

    Men should bow to the women.

  47. Step 4

    Women should curtsy to the men.

  48. Step 5

    Keep holding hands with your partner until the hold is broken when the caller chooses a new dance step.

Tips & Warnings
  • Single dancers may move clockwise or counterclockwise around the circle in a single promenade.
