How to Install a Closet Shelf

Installing a closet shelf can address storage issues and reduce clutter around your home. Follow these steps.

Things You'll Need:

  • Closet shelf kit or material
  • Stud finder
  • Drill or screwdriver
  • Carpenter's level
  • Ladder (if needed)
  1. Step 1

    Measure and record the dimensions of your closet.

  2. Step 2

    Purchase closet shelf material or kit.

  3. Step 3

    Place the top hang rack horizontally at the highest point reachable. Secure the hang rack to the wall, making sure to fasten screws to studs. Find studs using a stud finder.

  4. Step 4

    Affix the first vertical shelf standard track over a wall stud. Ensure the shelf track is level. Secure to wall studs using screws. Place as many shelf tracks as needed. Do not place vertical shelf tracks more than 24 inches apart.

  5. Step 5

    Hang the shelf brackets into the shelf tracks. Ensure each closet shelf bracket is level with each other.

  6. Step 6

    Affix the wire shelving to the closet shelf brackets.

  7. Step 7

    Make sure unit is level and secure shelf standard tracks for more strength.

  8. Step 8

    Place end caps on all exposed wire shelf ends.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add extra shelves or baskets as needs grow.
  • Utilize a longer top shelf to maximize upper storage.
  • Use a ladder to install top shelves to avoid injury.
  • Cap all exposed metal wire shelf ends to prevent injury.
