Step1
Pick a style. Maybe you you'd like to feel like you're falling asleep in the old west, or maybe just like you're settling into a nice night after working on the farm all day. There are as many different styles of "rustic" as there are people to consider them. The important thing, however, is to pick one. Don't try to include a little of each style.
Step2
Change your furniture. Look around your room. Does that black, particle board desk from 15 years ago fit with a rustic theme? Probably not. Take serious inventory of your bedroom furniture. If it doesn't fit with your theme, move it to another room or get rid of it. Keep in mind, however, that something old may be able to fit in with your new decor just with some changes or by adding a runner or other accessory to it.
Step3
Paint or put up new wallpaper. Maybe you already have the perfect walls for your new decor. That's terrific! Then, you can skip this step. However, if you have some other theme on your walls, strip that away and prepare it for your new style! If everything else in your room is rustic, but your walls don't match, the whole theme is going to fail.
Step4
Work with what you currently have. Maybe your grandmother's coffee table is very, very rustic, but you don't have a need for a coffee table in your bedroom. Well, find another use for it. Some of the old furniture and items we have in our homes are perfect for rustic decorating. Don't be afraid to use them in different ways--be creative.
Step5
Pay attention to detail. Does your light switch reflect your new style? What about your light fixture? Your doorknob? Cabinet pulls? These details can "make" your new bedroom when done right. Visit your local home improvement store for ideas for these last touches.
