Step 1
Assign your children responsibilities around the house at a young age. Even toddlers can help pick up their toys and put their dirty clothes where they belong.
-
Step 2
Demonstrate to your child how to do the chores so they know what's expected of them. It may turn out to be easier than they thought.
-
Step 3
Teach children one chore at a time. Do not add another one before they can do the first chore. You don't want to give them too much responsibility too soon or they may get overwhelmed and give up.
-
Step 4
Explain to your children that they are expected to do chores to help the household run smoothly. Let them know the chores are not a form of punishment.
-
Step 5
Rotate the chores once you children have learned how to perform them all so they don't become bored.
-
Step 6
Provide children with rewards when they have done their chores, such as an allowance. Besides encouraging them to do their chores it also teaches fiscal responsibility.
-
Step 7
Establish consequences for failure to do chores. Make the consequences reasonable and always follow through.
