Step 1
Choose a highlighting product. There are many brands and colors available at drug and grocery stores as well as large department stores such as Wal Mart and Target. Choose a product based on your hair length and desired color. A cap and hook product works best for short to medium length hair; a brush product works best for longer hair. Choose a color a few shades lighter than your hair.
-
Step 2
Read the instructions that come with the product carefully. Not all at-home highlighting kits are the same, and they require different processing times and application techniques. Conduct the suggested strand test to determine the exact processing time for your hair.
-
Step 3
Put on the gloves that come in the package, and mix the highlight solution according to directions. Most products require you to stir a powder into a cream developer.
-
Step 4
Apply the highlighter with gloved hands to the desired strands of dry hair. If using the cap and hook method, pull the desired strands of hair through the cap and apply the solution to those strands. For brush methods, use the brush to apply the mixture where you would like the highlights. Both methods typically include instructions that help you best place the highlights. Make sure to thoroughly coat and saturate each strand.
-
Step 5
Time the highlights according to the strand test indication. Check the color often, and if you see the desired results before the time is up, proceed to the next step.
-
Step 6
Rinse the product off your hair with lukewarm or cool water until it runs completely clear.
-
Step 7
Condition your newly highlighted hair to restore moisture and shine.
