Highlights are a great way to add dimension and shine to your hair. Much more subtle than completely changing your color, highlights can easily transform and enhance your style. With the variety of products available today you can even highlight your hair right at home without an expensive trip to the salon.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a highlighting product. There are many brands and colors available at drug and grocery stores as well as large department stores such as Wal Mart and Target. Choose a product based on your hair length and desired color. A cap and hook product works best for short to medium length hair; a brush product works best for longer hair. Choose a color a few shades lighter than your hair.

  2. Step 2

Read the instructions that come with the product carefully. Not all at-home highlighting kits are the same, and they require different processing times and application techniques. Conduct the suggested strand test to determine the exact processing time for your hair.

  3. Step 3

Put on the gloves that come in the package, and mix the highlight solution according to directions. Most products require you to stir a powder into a cream developer.

  4. Step 4

Apply the highlighter with gloved hands to the desired strands of dry hair. If using the cap and hook method, pull the desired strands of hair through the cap and apply the solution to those strands. For brush methods, use the brush to apply the mixture where you would like the highlights. Both methods typically include instructions that help you best place the highlights. Make sure to thoroughly coat and saturate each strand.

  5. Step 5

Time the highlights according to the strand test indication. Check the color often, and if you see the desired results before the time is up, proceed to the next step.

  6. Step 6

Rinse the product off your hair with lukewarm or cool water until it runs completely clear.

  7. Step 7

Condition your newly highlighted hair to restore moisture and shine.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use shampoo, conditioner and styling products specially designed for color-treated hair in order to maintain the color and keep your hair healthy.
  • For a natural, sun-kissed look, apply the highlights to the top layer of hair only.
  • Do not shampoo your hair the day you highlight for the best developing and color. The natural oils in your hair will help protect it from the chemical process and keep it healthy and shiny.
