Most kids love playing in a sandbox. With a little time and these easy instructions, you can build a sturdy, wooden sandbox in your own backyard.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Playground sand
  • (4) 2 x 12 wood with 2 cut into 4 foot pieces and 2 cut into 3 foot 10 1/2 inch pieces.
  • (4) 4 x 4 inch wood cut into 11 1/4 inch pieces.
  • (4) 3/4 inch plywood cut into triangles with 15 inch sides
  • One piece of lattice cut into a 4 x 4 square
  • Hammer
  • 3 inch nails
  1. Step 1

Purchase the supplies at a home and garden store such as Home Depot or Lowe's. They also sell the playground sand.

  2. Step 2

Nail the sides of the sandbox together using the 4-foot pieces of 2 x 12 wood for the front and the back and the 3-foot pieces of 2 x 12 wood for the sides. Secure each corner with 3 nails.

  3. Step 3

Place the 4 x 4 pieces of wood in the inside corners of the sandbox and fasten with 3 nails in each side.

  4. Step 4

Install the triangular pieces of wood on the top of each corner to form seats. Make sure they are flush with the edges of the sandbox. Nail them down on the corners and along the sides.

  5. Step 5

Place the sandbox frame where you want it and fill it with playground sand.

  6. Step 6

Cover the sandbox when it is not being used so animals, such as neighborhood cats, will stay out. Use a plastic tarp or sheet of plywood held down by a couple of heavy rocks to keep it from becoming the neighborhood litter box.

Tips & Warnings
  • Only purchase untreated wood to prevent harm to children.
