Knowing how to cook on hot rocks can come in handy if you're camping or stranded in the wild. This cooking method works best if you're cooking small foods for just a few people.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Gather some rocks and lay them flat and close together. You'll need 10 to 20, depending on their size. Try to pick flat rocks that aren't slate or other layered stones.
Step2
Find a large handful of tinder to lay on the rocks that you're going to cook on. Cover the tinder with dry sticks or branches.
Step3
Set fire to the tinder to make the rocks hot. Allow the fire to burn for about 30 minutes until only ashes remain.
Step4
Prepare the food you will cook on the hot rocks, while you wait for the fire to die down. Eggs, fish, and small game are ideal for this cooking method.
Step5
Sweep off the ashes with a handful of green twigs. Make sure they are swept to the side of the rocks and away from anything that could catch fire, such as dry leaves. Everything on the rocks, including the rocks themselves, will be scorching, so be careful.
Step6
Cook your food directly on the hot rocks. The rocks will be hottest in the center, so food that needs to cook quicker should be placed there. The rocks around the outer edges will be cooler, for the foods that require slower cooking.
Step7
Put your unpeeled potatoes under the hot rocks to bake. When cooked completely, remove the peelings before you eat them.
Step8
Continue to cook on the rocks for as long as they stay hot. Repeat the process if you need more cooking time.
