How to Pack for a Trip To the Jungle

An adventure to the jungle may be next on your to-do list, but if you aren't prepared, the only fun you'll have is getting out of there. Here are some basics you'll need to pack for the jungle.

1. Remember specialized clothing for your trip to the jungle: long-sleeved cotton shirts, wide-brimmed cotton hats, lightweight pants that taper or gather at the ankles, tough-soled boots with canvas tops and toe protection.
2. Bring protection against insects. Pack a mosquito net, insect repellant spray and insect repellent bands for your arms and legs if you want to avoid bites as you traverse through the heavy vegetation of the jungle.
3. Pack a first-aid kit that can be kept on your body at all times. You can purchase first-aid kits that are specifically for tropical locations at various online stores like IMS-PLUS. At the minimum, it must contain fever medicines, antiseptics and bandages.
4. Keep a machete or knife sheathed on your belt. Research customs laws for traveling with such weapons before you leave for your trip to the jungle. It is usually just a matter of how they are packed. A knife is an essential tool for cutting through heavy vegetation.
5. Invest in an adequate water bottle. Military canteens are durable, and you can find them at surplus shops. They come with pouches that attach to your belt. Also, purchase water purification tablets to purify any water you collect for drinking during your trip to the jungle.
6. Get a hammock to take with you on your trip. This will save energy and time when you start to build your shelter and need a bed off the ground.
7. Slip a waterproof camera into your luggage before you go. This is an adventure you will want to document.
8. Pack other conveniences that will make the trip to the jungle even more enjoyable. A flashlight, binoculars, poncho and sunblock will ensure your adventure isn't too frightening.
