Remodeling or building a home is always a daunting task. The end result is always a lot of fun to see, but getting there can be a huge challenge. Too many people with too many ideas, potential delays that cause the completion date to be set back and unexpected costs that may pop up all can create a big headache.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Set a budget. But allow for a little wiggle room to be prepared for any unexpected increase in costs.
Step2
Select a design. If you are building a house, have a floor plan and any changes you want made to it ready to show your contractor. If you are remodeling, put your ideas down on paper.
Step3
Choose a contractor. Not only should the skill and capabilities of your contractor meet your standards, but your personalities need to agree, too. The contractor will be a part of your life for many months, so you need to get along.
Step4
Select your appliances. Pick out what you want and make sure they are delivered in time for your contractor to install without slowing progress.
Step5
Be flexible to changes and new and possibly improved ideas about your design. Occasionally, changes need to be made to accommodate structural necessities.
Step6
Oversee your project. Don't put your faith entirely in the hands of your contractor. He may be doing a great job, but once the project is finished, it becomes more difficult to makes changes.
