Step 1
Choose a quit date. You'll want to see your doctor before that date. Think about whether you have vacation time or any special activities planned at that time.
-
Step 2
Ask your doctor if a medication plan is right for you. Your doctor can explain the medications that are available to help you stop smoking and whether you are a good candidate for one of them.
-
Step 3
Set up a support structure before you quit smoking. Ask your family, friends, coworkers and others to give you encouragement and support. Ask if you can call them if you are having a weak moment.
-
Step 4
Identify obstacles and solutions. Try to imagine all the activities that will be difficult to do without smoking. What can you do to avoid the pitfalls? List the obstacles and your solutions for overcoming them.
-
Step 5
Save the money you would normally spend on cigarettes in a separate place. Depending on how many packs of cigarettes you smoke each week, you might be spending thousands per year. Set that money aside so you can watch it accumulate. Purchase something that you will enjoy--it's your reward for a tremendous effort.
