Adjusting a bicycle seat is a simple task. You can earn how to adjust a bicycle seat and what tools you will need in just a few minutes.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place a carpenters level on the seat to see if it is level. Adjust the seat angle accordingly. A two degree angle up or down is most comfortable for some riders.

  2. Step 2

Wear the shoes that you will wear while riding the bicycle. Determine the proper height of the seat while wearing the shoes.

  3. Step 3

Stabilize the bicycle in a bicycle trainer. Use a doorway or lean on a wall if you do not have a bicycle trainer. Have someone with you to help.

  4. Step 4

Put your heels on the pedals and pedal backwards. Note the bend in your knee when the pedal reaches the bottom of the stroke. The knee should be completely straight when your heels are on the pedals at the bottom of the stroke. Adjust the seat up if the knee is bent. Adjust the seat down if you cannot reach the pedals with your heels.

  5. Step 5

Use an Allen Wrench, usually 5mm, to loosen the bolt on the seat post. Move the seat back and forth to loosen it or gently pound on it with your hand. Adjust the seat height.

  6. Step 6

Mark the height of the seat with electricians or duct tape. By doing this, you will not have to be fitted for seat height again. Tighten the bolt as tight as you can.

  7. Step 7

Ride the bike to test the height of the seat. Make small adjustments either up or down until you feel comfortable riding the bicycle.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a hinge lubricant to loosen stubborn bicycle posts.
  • Have multiple sized Allen Wrenches on hand to assure the proper size.
  • Tighten the bolt on the seat post tightly or the seat will not hold its proper position.
