How to Troubleshoot a Printer

Nothing is more troublesome than having finished a project and not being able to get it out of the computer and onto paper. Printer problems are usually minor and can be solved at home within a few minutes and with little technical knowledge.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Check all cables to and from the computer. Also check that the electrical cable is connected to the wall outlet. Be sure that all cables are securely connected and in the right locations and turn the printer on.

  2. Step 2

    Try to print a test page. Click "Start", "Control Panel" and "Printers". Right click the printer. On the "General" tab click "Print a Test Page". Click "OK" if the printer prints the test page correctly. If not, follow the onscreen directions for trouble shooting.

  3. Step 3

    Open Notepad and type some text into the window. Select "File" and "Print". Select the printer that you are trying to print to and print. If it prints, copy and paste the text into program is giving you problems. Try to print again, if again it doesn't print, then a corrupt font may be the problem. Reinstall the font.

  4. Step 4

    Reinstall the printer by deleting it and reinstalling it. Go to the printer and right click it. Select "Delete" and "Yes" to delete it. Add the printer by double clicking the "Add Printer". Select the printer that you just deleted. Follow the on screen directions to reinstall this printer and then try to print a test page.

  5. Step 5

    Quit all programs and reboot your computer. Restart in Safe Mode, which is usually done by pressing the "F8" key before the Windows screen appears. Open Notepad and print. If successful, print from Word or another program.

  6. Step 6

    Search the printers manufacture's website for more troubleshooting information. They may have special tips and procedures for the type of problem you are having.

  7. Step 7

    Find and check the manual for any troubleshooting tips.

  8. Step 8

    See if others can print if on a network. If not, contact the network administrator to see if there is a network communication problem.
