Where have all the shoe strings gone? Take a quick glance at today's footwear and you will find flip flops, sandals, slip-ons and elastic fasteners instead of laces. Fortunately, learning to tie your shoes gets easier with practice. Below are two tied and true knots that should keep the Velcro at bay.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

    Standard Knot

  1. Step 1

Hold your laces in each hand and pull them tightly to prepare for tying.

  2. Step 2

Cross the laces to make an "X" holding them together with either your right or left hand.

  3. Step 3

Use your free hand to run your top shoe lace under both laces then pull them snuggly to make a single knot.

  4. Step 4

Pull one of your laces up and bend it in half making a loop then hold the loop in place with your fingers.

  5. Step 5

Wrap your free shoe lace around the base of the loop twice then take the upper half and bend it through the hole at the base creating another loop.

  6. Step 6

Pull the loops tightly in opposite directions to complete your knot.

  7. This second variation called the "Bunny Knot" is primarily used when teaching children to tie their shoes

  8. Step 1

Follow steps one through three from the above example.

  9. Step 2

Bend both laces into loops by folding them in half and holding them in your hands.

  10. Step 3

Cross your loops forming an "X" and hold them together with one free hand.

  11. Step 4

Pull your bottom loop up and feed it through the hole at the base of the loops.

  12. Step 5

Grab the ends of both loops and pull outwards until you have completed your knot.
