Things You'll Need:
- Insulation
- Water saving toilet
- Caulk
- Weather stripping

Step 1
Turn off lights when not in use. Light bulbs kept on all day can be a big waste of energy. If you are going to leave the room for longer than five to ten minutes, make a habit out of turning off the lights when you leave the room. If you have children, stress the importance of keeping the lights off unless it's absolutely necessary.
-
Step 2
Keep your thermostat at a reasonable level. During the summer, leave your thermostat at around 78 degrees. If you aren't going to be home, put your thermostat on 85 degrees, or turn it off. In the winter, it makes the most sense to keep your thermostat at around 68 degrees. Additionally, during the winter it's often best to wear warm clothing while at home to help save energy.
-
Step 3
Add extra insulation to your attic and walls. If you house is well insulated, it will be able to retain heat in the winter and keep the cool air in during the summer.
-
Step 4
Take quick showers. Using excess water wastes energy. If you limit your time in the shower to between five and seven minutes, you can save a lot of energy. Also be sure to repair any leaky faucets that may be dripping water. Investing in a low flow toilet will help save energy over time.
-
Step 5
Leave electronics off when not in use. A common mistake is to keep computers or video game systems running all the time. To save energy, keep all electronics off unless they are in use, including computers, video game systems, stereos and televisions.
-
Step 6
Weatherproof your house to help save on your energy bills. Place weatherstripping around all your doors and windows and caulk all gaps.
