Learning how to play poker is not as daunting of a task as it may seem. There are many available avenues to learn how to play the game. While it will take a long time to master all the intricacies of poker, learning the basics of poker isn't overly difficult.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn the basic rules to the game of poker. A good book that covers all the basic rules of the game is called "Poker for Dummies." The book will hold your hand from the very beginnings of learning the game all the way up until you are ready to move on and start playing poker. The book is available at most bookstores, as well as on Amazon.com.

  2. Step 2

Consider taking online poker classes. Several websites such as pokerschoolonline.com have professionals who will teach you all the intricacies of playing poker.

  3. Step 3

Download free poker software. You can find free poker software at Fulltiltpoker.net or Pokerstars.net. Once you download the free software, you can play poker against people from around the world without have to use real money. Fulltiltpoker.net and Pokerstars.net also have links that point you to resources that can help you learn poker.

  4. Step 4

Find poker games in your area. Poker games happen daily throughout the world. You can use the Internet or your local yellow pages to find poker clubs close to where you live. Check Barpoker.com for games in your area.

  5. Step 5

Practice the game of poker. Like any game, you can't get better without the repetition of practice. Whether you are playing online or in live games, the practice can only help you get better.

  6. Step 6

Decide if you want to play poker with real money. Some people play poker for a living or as their preferred way to gamble. If you chose to do so, you can either go to a casino or download poker software that will let you play with real money. You can use the same software from Fulltiltpoker and Pokerstars to play poker for real money.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't play poker using real money until you are ready. There are plenty of places you can play for free until you feel that you have the necessary experience.
