    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Paper
    • Pencil
    • Eraser
      • 1

Have a picture or model for reference. This may be a toy car or a detailed photo, but it helps to have a point of reference instead of creating from memory or imagination.

      • 2

Quickly sketch in the basic shapes of the vehicle. For older cars, these will be squares and rectangles with sharper edges. For newer cars the shapes will be curved, rounded and angled more. Don't toil over perfect-looking lines at this point The goal is to get the basic shape and proportion.

      • 3

Draw in large details after the basic shape is established. These will be things such as wheels, windows, windshield, and doors if it is a side view. As more pieces of the vehicle come together, the original lines and shapes may need to be altered slightly.

      • 4

Next add more details such as the bumpers, headlights, taillights and hubcaps. Erase original lines as needed.

      • 5

Draw in permanent lines more heavily, and begin shading once all adjustments to the shape have been made.

      • 6

Color the picture. Crayons are good for beginners. Markers or colored pencils will also work well for those with more experience.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Remember to draw lightly. It is better to draw many lines quickly than to spend a lot of time trying to get the one perfect line.

Also remember that unless the car is very dirty, it probably has a high gloss shine. Sketching loose ovoid and irregular curved highlights on the body of the car can give it a realistic shiny look.
