Finding a quality martial arts school can be a time consuming task. However, the benefits of this national art can last a lifetime. Martial arts can instill discipline, work ethic and spiritual growth. That's why finding a good school with excellent teachers is so important. Read through the steps below before beginning your journey into this fascinating art.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Make an appointment with your doctor to see if a class is advisable for you. Some forms of martial arts (such as Tai Chi) use slow, deliberate movements that are safe for nearly anyone.
Step2
Decide what you want to accomplish. Are you trying to become more fit? Do you want to compete in tournaments? Does grappling or using weapons interest you? These are just a few questions to ask yourself before checking into classes.
Step3
Choose your style. There are dozens of mainstream martial arts programs suited to most everyone's needs. Explore the different styles before plunging head first into that dojo. This will save you considerable time, money and bruises.
Step4
Schedule an introductory session with the schools that interest you. If one is not given, ask if you can observe a session to get a feel for the class. This is a great way to see how each program will fulfill your needs.
Step5
Evaluate the class approach regarding safety and teaching. Are the students monitored closely or generally left alone? Do new students receive as much attention as those with higher ranks? What is the range in age of the students? Are there enough teachers to go around or is the class too big for adequate individual attention?
Step6
Consider the school's credentials and general philosophy. As the adage goes, "actions speak louder than words." Watch how the instructors interact with their students. Do you feel a connection? Do they show respect and compassion? Are they readily available at all times?
Step7
Find out if the school is in a convenient location that fits into your weekly schedule and budget. In addition ask in advance about their payment options and try paying monthly until you decide if this is the place for you.
