How to Drink Like a Pirate

Actually being a pirate could be a headache. All that swordfighting, guarding your treasure and dealing with termites in your peg leg could be tiresome. But drinking like a pirate can be a lot of fun, especially if you stock the bar correctly. Here's how to do it right.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Rum
  • Sugar, preferably superfine
  • Limes or lemons
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Port wine
  • Beer or ale

Step1
Stock up on rum of all kinds. Rum was watered down for grog, but pirates preferred to drink it straight up if given the chance. Virtually any kind will do: anything from the fine spirits to rotgut would have been served aboard a pirate ship, depending on what they were lucky enough to "liberate" from an attacked vessel.
Step2
Whip up some grog. A sentimental favorite of pirates who were once part of the British Navy, you can make it at home if you wish. Take 1 shot of rum, 1 tsp. of sugar, a squeeze of lime or lemon and a cinnamon stick. Pour into a glass and top off with boiling water.
Step3
Get some good port wine. This fortified wine, now often served as a dessert wine, was another favorite tipple of pirates. Due to its relatively low cost, its alcoholic potency and its ability to stay drinkable in spite of temperature changes and sea voyages, it was a common rum substitute.
Step4
Buy some beer, preferably cheap. Pirates weren't picky about what they drank. Even though they may have preferred rum, if beer was available, they would drink it, too.

Tips & Warnings

  • Beer didn't survive long sea voyages well, so pirates mainly drank it while in port.
  • Real pirates would say any day is a good day to drink like a pirate, but you might want to mark your calendar for September 19, International Talk Like a Pirate Day.
  • Although pirates often did everything while drinking, never ever drive, captain a boat or do anything to risk your safety or that of another under the influence of alcohol.
