How to Install Aftermarket Tail Lights

Changing out the tail lights on your car is an easy way to really change the look of your vehicle. Aftermarket styles are very popular tail light housing styles and they can be added onto your vehicle very easily.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Turn off your car and make sure your head lights are turned off as well so that no power is being sent to the tail lights.

  2. Step 2

    Open your trunk to gain access to the back of the door or wall where your tail lights are located.

  3. Step 3

    Remove any paneling necessary to gain access to the backside of your tail lights. Most paneling comes off with pressure or a few screws.

  4. Step 4

    Pull out the tail light bulbs and wires from the tail light housings.

  5. Step 5

    Unscrew or unbolt the tail lights from the car. They are usually held on with only a few nuts.

  6. Step 6

    Replace the old tail light with the new one by pulling from the outside of the car to remove the old one, then simply putting the new one in its place.

  7. Step 7

    Secure the new housing with the nuts, bolts or screws used to hold the old one.

  8. Step 8

    Reattach the bulbs and wires to the new tail light housing.

  9. Step 9

    Put the paneling you removed to access the tail light back in place and shut the trunk.

  10. Step 10

    Test your tail lights to be sure they are still working after installing the new ones.

Tips & Warnings
  • Adding aftermarket tail lights makes your car stand out a little more than usual. So be prepared for the added attention from admirers and thieves as well.
  • Aftermarket tail lights may be illegal in your area. Be sure to check with local law enforcement on your local laws.
