If you use cloth diapers on your baby, you are well aware of the unpleasant lingering smell that can be left over, even after a wash. Follow these simple steps to get the stink out of cloth diapers and ensure fresh smelling diapers every time.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make sure all the poopy residue is completely removed before storing the diaper in the diaper pail. Use a disposable liner in the diaper to ensure you get it as cleaned off as possible.

  2. Step 2

Soak the diaper in a solution of water and borax or baking soda to help neutralize the odor. Make sure to follow instructions according to the manufacturer of the diaper. Some diapers prefer a dry store method.

  3. Step 3

Wash the cloth diapers every third day at the most. Waiting longer will only allow bacteria to grow faster, making for a more stinky diaper.

  4. Step 4

Store the dirty diaper pail in a cool area, especially during the summer months. This will also help cut down on the growth of bacteria.

  5. Step 5

Do a cold rinse first in the washing machine, followed by a heavy duty hot wash. Use a double cold rinse cycle on the hot wash if you machine offers this.

  6. Step 6

Add a small amount of vinegar (about a ΒΌ cup) to the rinse cycle on every other wash of the diapers. This will help neutralize odors and kill bacteria. Too much vinegar could make diapers stink more.

  7. Step 7

Hang your diapers outside to dry when the weather allows. The sun does wonders for knocking out odor and safely bleaching out stains.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do smaller wash loads. Too many diapers in the wash makes it difficult for them to get evenly washed.
  • Less is more when it comes to detergent. Too much detergent can also lead to odor.
  • Fabric softener is a no-no. It coats the fabric and affects absorption and odor retention.
