How to Visit Austin Texas

Known as the "Live Music Capital of the World," Austin is a visitor-friendly city without the "tourist trap" feel of other destinations. Filled with open green spaces and live music venues, Austin has something for lovers of both outdoor recreation and club nightlife. Be prepared to burn the candle at both ends when you visit Austin, Texas!

  1. Step 1

    Go the to the Austin Visitor's Information Center to pick up city maps, guides and brochures featuring events that you may be interested in.

  2. Step 2

    Create a "to do" list of your favorite activities that includes a couple of daytime activities and one evening event for each day of your visit in Austin.

  3. Step 3

    Plan on visiting 6th street on one evening of your visit. This historic street in downtown Austin is lined with famous live music clubs, restaurants and dance clubs. Park under the I-35 bridge at 6th Street and head east. The club area runs to about Congress Avenue. Turn and walk the other side of the road on the return, checking out the various clubs along the way. Live bands usually start playing around 9 p.m., so plan on staying late to enjoy the fun.

  4. Step 4

    Book a tour with Austin Duck Adventures, offering both land and lake guided tours of Austin's highlights.

  5. Step 5

    Visit Barton Springs Pool, a large natural spring-fed pool in Zilker Park. The spring water in the pool stays a constant 68 degrees all year round.

  6. Step 6

    Hike to the top of Mount Bonnell for spectacular views of the city and Town Lake. One of the oldest tourist spots in Austin, Mount Bonnell is also the city's highest point at 785 feet.

  7. Step 7

    See the Texas State Capitol building. Located at Congress and 11th Street, the Capitol is a favorite sightseeing destination, with guided tours available. Nearby sights within walking distance include the Governor's Mansion and the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum.

Tips & Warnings
  • Summers are very hot and humid in Austin, making fall through spring the best times to visit.
  • Many wonderful side trips to the hill country are nearby, including Lake Travis and Enchanted Rock.
  • Plan your flight and hotel well in advance. Austin is a popular destination with many large events throughout the year, making some weekends difficult to book for hotels or air travel.
