1
Open the image in Photoshop and go to "Mode" under the "Image" heading.
-
2
Convert the image to grayscale if it is originally in color. The most striking hand-tinted photos are left mostly gray with certain areas strategically made a brilliant color.
-
-
3
Next convert the image back to RGB mode so that color can be added again. If the original image was in black and white, then it needs to be converted from grayscale to RGB.
-
4
Create a new layer for the color to be painted onto, so that the color will overlay the grayscale image. Select "Color" in the "Layers" mode.
-
5
Hit the F6 key to display the color palette, and choose a color to paint. Remember to use traditional painting techniques and use color variation.
-
6
Choose the proper brush with the brush tool. Use a small hard-edged brush for details and a large softer brush for large areas. The airbrush may also be used. Brush the color in the appropriate area.
-
7
Save the file as either a TIFF or JPEG. TIFF will retain all the detail of the photo, but will take up much more storage space.
