Child tax credit gives you extra money to support your children, in addition to child benefits. The following steps show how you can qualify.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Qualify for child tax credit if you have to have a child or children under 16, between 16 and 17 and working less than 24 hors per week, or under 20 living at home and in full-time education.

  2. Step 2

You must be earning less than £58,000. If your household earns more than this you cannot qualify for child tax credit.

  3. Step 3

Be prepared to provide information to the HM revenue. This includes information about you and your partner's income and information about your children.

  4. Step 4

Phone the information line. The number is 0845 300 3900 and they will send you a claim pack. The lines are open 8am to 8pm.

Tips & Warnings
  • You don't have to be a parent to claim, but you do have to be the child's guardian.
  • Don't hold back information. This will only slow down your application.
