Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand the nature of Learn And Serve America programs. The organization provides charitable assistance and grant monies in the fields of education, community service, Native American affairs and higher education. The organization's programs are categorized under those four umbrella headings, and the Web site offers a searchable database of articles and opportunities relating to them.

  2. Step 2

Browse articles by following the links to the field in which you are interested in volunteering. You will be redirected to a page where you can peruse a complete list of the grants available in your state or region. The article database is also searchable by keyword, state, zip code and city, if you want to narrow your criteria.

  3. Step 3

View a complete list of all grant recipients and sub-recipients active in your state or region, if you want to search for existing opportunities you can join. If you want to start your own program, you will have to follow the links to the specific state agency that administers Learn And Serve America's grant programs. These links can be found on the pages detailing each of the organization's four specific areas of development.

  4. Step 4

Review the details of the initiatives being undertaken in your state by selecting your state from the drop-down menu on the Learn And Serve America homepage. You will be invited to read an overview of the programs available in your state, statistics on initiatives and funding and the contact information of people who can help you get involved with specific programs.

  5. Step 5

Join a program by contacting the person administrating the particular state initiative that you are interested in. The specific requirements for volunteering will vary, depending on your state and the exact nature of the program. Keep in mind that since Learn And Serve America works primarily with children, extensive background checks may be required of volunteers.
