How to Volunteer With a Homeland Security Program

Homeland security programs train citizens in first aid, emergency response and community safety initiatives so that a reserve corps can promote safety and aid municipal emergency services in the event of a disaster. Follow these steps to volunteer for a program.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply only with organizations that offer volunteer opportunities that are officially endorsed by the Department of Homeland Security. These organizations include Citizen Corps, the U.S.A. Freedom Corps and Learn & Serve America (see Resources below).

    • 2

Familiarize yourself with the initiatives undertaken at each of the volunteer groups. These range from first aid, fire and police volunteers to educational programs and public safety watches. Participate in the program that interests you the most, or one for which you will be qualified without needing additional training.

    • 3

Log on to the Web site of the state or local branch of the organization you want to volunteer with.

    • 4

Fill in the volunteer application with your personal information, including your name, address, telephone number, email address and occupation or place of employment. Required fields will be indicated.

    • 5

Read and agree to the terms and conditions in the organization's privacy policy. If any background checks are required, you will be notified at this point, or when the organization contacts you after reviewing your application.

    • 6

Wait for the organization to contact you. Request contact information if you have any further questions.

Tips & Warnings

  • Apply with local branches of the services offering homeland security volunteer opportunities rather than submitting your information to national offices. It will reduce the time needed to process your application.

  • Some programs require criminal background checks and drug screening. You should be sure you will pass these checks before you volunteer with a homeland security program.
