Things You'll Need:

  • Physician
  1. Step 1

Consider taking a quiz such as those provided by St. George's Hospital Medical School, University of London or Dartmouth College Health Service. These quizzes are available online and may help you to recognize whether you are suffering from a binge eating disorder (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Contact your physician and arrange for an appointment to discuss your possible binge eating disorder.

  3. Step 3

Be prepared to participate in a physical examination conducted by your doctor, which may also include an assessment of your physical and mental health history. You will need to tell your doctor of any previous diseases or injuries which may have effect your eating habits or attitudes towards food and could help your doctor correctly diagnose your food related disorder.

  4. Step 4

Expect to undergo laboratory tests such as blood work and a urinalysis, which will be used to diagnose any physiological causes for your binge eating or obesity before a diagnosis is made.

  5. Step 5

Participate in other medical exams as instructed by your physician such as X-rays or heart monitoring. These exams may be used to assess the general state of your health, as well as lead to a diagnosis of an eating disorder, such as binge eating.

  6. Step 6

Know that an essential tool to diagnose a binge eating disorder will be a psychological assessment conducted by a trained psychologist or psychiatrist. Your physician may provide you with a referral to a qualified provider.

Tips & Warnings
  • Approach your loved one in a non-judgmental manner when you wish to discuss her possible binge eating diagnosis. Many of those who suffer from this disorder adopt this self-destructive behavior out of feelings of insecurity and will require your unconditional support to see a full recovery.
  • Be prepared for your doctor's appointment by writing down your medical history as well as any questions you might like to ask during your appointment.
  • Complications which may occur due to a binge eating disorder may include heart attack, stroke, gallbladder disease and many other health issues, some of which are related to obesity.
