Binge eating is a disorder in which an individual continually overeats, regardless of whether he or she feels hungry. You can recognize the symptoms of binge eating by learning more about this disorder.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Recognize the Symptoms of Binge Eating

  1. Step 1

Understand that people who binge may not show any physical signs of overeating. However, they may demonstrate a pattern of behavior which could indicate they are suffering from this disorder.

  2. Step 2

Look for signs that the individual is consistently eating a large quantity of food, even when he is not hungry.

  3. Step 3

Notice whether an individual eats until she is uncomfortably full.

  4. Step 4

Understand that many times binge eaters eat in secret or alone due to shame or embarrassment.

  5. Step 5

Notice whether you eat or "graze" continuously throughout the day without ever feeling satiated.

  6. Step 6

Find that if you feel you are unable to control what or what quantity of food you are eating, you may be suffering from a binge eating disorder.

  7. Step 7

Pay attention to whether you eat out of inability to cope with stress or emotional distress.

  8. Step 8

Recognize that feelings of guilt, disgust or depression over your appearance or how much you eat may be a symptom of a binge eating disorder.

  9. Step 9

Understand that the symptoms of binge eating may lead to other eating disorder behavior such as purging or bulimia. These behaviors are often adopted to counteract the effects of overeating.

  10. Step 10

Understand that the compulsion to overeat is a manifestation of an addiction. Those who suffer from this may feel that even though they dislike their behavior, they are unable to take any action to change it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Contact your physician if you feel you are suffering from a binge eating disorder. The treatment of this disorder may require physical and psychological treatment to help mediate any underlying emotional or psychological issues that effect the way you think about eating.
  • Get support for binge eating at the National Eating Disorders Association Web site (see Resources below).
