How to Use OTC Drugs to Treat Muscle Strain

Depending upon the severity of a muscle strain, over-the counter (OTC) drugs can be an effective way to treat the injury and to facilitate healing, especially if you are reluctant to use prescription painkillers or muscle relaxants. Muscle strains, which involve the tearing of a muscle from the tendons, can be quite painful, yet a simple OTC solution, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, may be all you need during recovery.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Over-the-counter medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen

Use OTC Drugs to Treat a Muscle Strain

Step1
Consider the use of acetaminophen, commonly known by its brand name Tylenol, which is the most commonly recommended OTC drug used to treat muscle strain. Acetaminophen is relatively safe for a significant amount of the population. Use of ice packs and compression is still recommended, however, since acetaminophen will not reduce swelling.
Step2
Use an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) such as ibuprofen or naproxen if you need an OTC medication that also helps to reduce swelling. Since NSAIDs may have a greater potential for side effects among users and are not recommended for people with a history of heart problems, check with your doctor first before taking them.
Step3
Choose aspirin as an effective OTC pain reliever option. Make sure that aspirin is right for you, since it can create gastrointestinal side effects in some people.
Step4
Find a topical cream using such ingredients as menthol or camphor to rub on the injured area. Many of these products create a soothing effect that can help to distract from the pain. Be careful not to use these if the area is already covered with a bandage, since further irritation can result.
Step5
Continue to consult with your doctor about the effectiveness of the treatment, even when you stick to OTC medication. If the pain does not decrease in 3 days, seek medical care immediately.
Step6
Visit online sources, such as eMedicineHealth.com or the Eckard Pharmacy Web site, for more information on how to treat a muscle strain with over-the-counter drugs (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

  • Acetaminophen, the most widely recommended OTC drug for muscle strain, is not recommended for people with a history of liver disease, or people who consume at least three alcoholic beverages a day.
