Step 1
Use saline nasal sprays to moisten and cleanse the nasal membranes. Even though the nose may be runny and filled with mucous, cleansing the sinus passageway with saline will reduce the allergens residing in the nose.
-
Step 2
Make it easier to live with chronic sinusitis by using decongestants with a major onset of congestion.
-
Step 3
Relax in a warm shower and inhale the moist air to ease the irritation from burning, painful sinus congestion.
-
Step 4
Boil some water, set it on a sturdy table at a comfortable height and inhale the steam. This works best if a towel is used to cover the head like a tent to contain the steam.
-
Step 5
Surgery to remove any blockage or abnormality may be required to make it easier to live with sinusitis.
-
Step 6
Many chronic sinusitis sufferers must maintain a daily medication regimen to reduce the allergic response to allergens. The type of medication will be determined by your allergy specialist based on testing to determine the source of allergies.
-
Step 7
Reduce the allergens and source of irritation to ultimately reduce the overall discomfort of sinusitis.
-
Step 1
Participate in clinical trials to find control and cure for chronic sinusitis at Clinicaltrials.gov (see Resources below).
-
Step 2
Maintain control of medical conditions such as HIV, cystic fibrosis and any disease that affects the body's immune system. Many diseases cause the natural secretions to become thick.
-
Step 3
Seek medical attention when any kind of nasal congestion does not clear within a week to 10 days. Any condition lasting longer may be an indication of infection.
-
Step 4
Avoid pollutants such as cigarette smoke and seasonal irritants such as pollen.
-
Step 5
Work with your doctor to learn the source of allergens that cause chronic sinusitis.
-
Step 6
Drink plenty of fluids to keep the nasal secretions thin. This is especially important in dry, summer months.
