The most natural treatment of all for hair loss is simply to hide it. Avoid the side effects and expense of surgery or medications in hair loss treatment by choosing a cosmetic solution. Modern hairpieces and wigs appeal to all budgets and all kinds of people. If a complicating health issue has kept you from seeking medical treatment, or if your hair loss is temporary, you may benefit greatly from a wig or hairpiece.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Flexible tailor's measuring tape
  • Access to hairpiece manufacturers or distributors, online or in print catalogs or stores

    Select a Hairpiece

  1. Step 1

Measure your head, or have an in-store professional do it. Measure the circumference of your head, starting at your forehead, just above your eyebrows. Measure evenly all the way around until you get your size (include half inches).

  2. Step 2

Select a style based on your needs. Start by deciding whether to choose a toupee or full wig.

  3. Step 3

Browse available styles online or in catalogs or stores and pick one that flatters your face and body type. Many wig stores require you to purchase and wear a wig cap before trying on any wigs, and some stores limit the number of wigs customers can try on.

  4. Step 4

Choose materials based on your budget. Select synthetic or human hair (or a combination), and ready-made or custom sewing.

  5. Step 5

Select a color based on a match with your current hair or hairpiece, or opt for a whole new look.

Tips & Warnings
  • A toupee covers just the bald crown of the head. A full wig (for men or women) covers the entire head, including any existing hair. The kind of hairpiece you choose will make a difference in color selection.
  • Wigs and hairpieces vary greatly in cost. You'll pay least for ready-made synthetics, more for human hair and most for custom jobs.
  • Shopping in a store lets you try ready-made styles on immediately.
  • Hairpieces usually last from 1 to 4 years, depending on care, materials and quality of manufacturing.
  • Care for your hairpiece on a regular basis for the best appearance and the longest wear.
  • Poor-quality hairpieces may fade or lose shape more quickly than more expensive ones. Invest in the best quality you can afford.
  • When choosing a "celebrity" style hairpiece, keep in mind how your facial and body type differs from that person or another model.
